Details: Cuba 1953 - Sc C77-78 - (EDIFIL 559-60) The $2.00 and $5.00 Airmail stamps of 1953 in full original gum, never hinged blocks of 4. Only 15,000 stamps of the $2.00 value and 10,000 stamps of the $5.00 value were ever issued. The 2016 Scott catalogue value is US $500.00 for four never-hinged sets as singles. The 2012 EDIFIL catalogue value is € 560,- (US $ 630.00) for four never-hinged sets as singles. Blocks of 4 are not priced in either catalogue. There is some very light offset transfer on the gum side (or "calcado en el reverso", as Spanish-speaking collectors refer to it) from the parts of the design printed in brown, (Airplane, AEREO and Peso values). Sets of unused singles are scarce but can be found from time to time. A complete, unused, never-hinged set of blocks of four as this one, is incredibly rare and you can go, literally, a collecting lifetime without being able to find one. Obviously, not very many sets in block of 4 were purchased by Cuban collectors back in 1953, because of the very high face value (28.00 Cuban Pesos), that at that time was, on average, around the weekly salary of many Cuban workers. The Cuban Peso was trading at parity to the U.S. Dollar back in 1953 - (28.00 Cuban Pesos = 28.00 U.S. dollars)
