Cuba 1899 - EDIFIL 59ip - 160x89 mm, Knife 75, Watermark US POD 99 stamped envelope.
The 1899 5c blue on amber Christopher Columbus stamped envelope used in 1902 from Havana to London. With privately printed corner card of Alonso Jauma & Ca., Habana. From information available related to transportation of mail with Puerto Principe stamps, we know that the Alonso Jauma y Ca. firm was in the cabotage business, but were also bankers and sold chocolate and beer! Indicium cancelled with HAVANA, CUBA, JUN 24 1902 duplex cds. Backstamped in transit at New York and on arrival at London. Cleanly opened at top. These privately printed and used 1899 envelopes are listed but not priced by EDIFIL. Used envelopes of the 1903 issue with privately printed corner cards are also listed and priced at € 95,- (US $ 125.00) We are assuming that envelopes from the 1899 issue are at least as scarce as those from the 1903 issue, if not scarcer. Very nice item!
